چکیده

When performing health economic evaluations all costs and expected benefits (in terms of clinical effectiveness, utility, monetary benefits) should be taken into account. Costs are direct indirect: concerning the latter, two main methods have been developed. The Human Capital Approach (HCA) considers gross salary in days absence from work due to illness; method based on Friction (FC), instead, equally value productivity, but losses limited period illness when it is necessary replace absent worker. This paper conducts a review literature contributions for European countries aims at identifying common trends within geographical areas. Estimation indirect different areas may reflect real cost services across schematize conditions under which certain preferred. Overall, analyses applying HCA most frequent, while studies FC more Netherlands, where this had reasons apply or depend institutional context, example, flexibility job market, epidemiologic environment.

Estimating lifetime healthcare costs with morbidity data

BACKGROUND In many developed countries, the economic crisis started in 2008 producing a serious contraction of the financial resources spent on healthcare. Identifying which individuals will require more resources and the moment in their lives these resources have to be allocated becomes essential. It is well known that a small number of individuals with complex healthcare needs consume a high ...

Maximum Performance Efficiency Approaches for Estimating Best Practice Costs

Data mining is increasingly being used to gain competitive advantage. In this chapter, we propose a principle of maximum performance efficiency (MPE) as contribution to the data-mining toolkit. This principle seeks to estimate optimal or boundary behavior, in contrast to techniques like regression analysis, which predict average behavior. This MPE principle is explained in the context of activi...

Estimating direct and indirect costs of premenstrual syndrome.

OBJECTIVE To quantify the economic impact of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) on the employer. METHODS Data were collected from 374 women aged 18-45 with regular menses. Direct costs were quantified using administrative claims of these patients and the Medicare Fee Schedule. Indirect costs were quantified by both self-reported days of work missed and lost productivity at work. Regression analyses ...

Estimating the Direct Costs and Benefits of Alternative Approaches

We have reviewed studies demonstrating that effective early intervention could reduce either the actual incidence of later criminal behavior or at least the risk factors (such as child abuse or behavioral problems in school) that are closely associated with future criminality. In this chapter, we estimate the direct costs and crime-reduction benefits of implementing such programs in California ...

Reporting error in weight and height among the elderly: Implications and recommendations for estimating healthcare costs

A large literature has examined the healthcare consequences of obesity. A major barrier to careful study of these consequences is reliance on self-reported measures of weight and height. Previous research has developed algorithms to adjust for such error among working age adults. In this study we consider elderly adults, a group likely to differ in reporting error patterns from working age adul...
